What are VG and PG
January 22, 2023E-liquids, also known as e-juices, typically contain a mixture of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavorings alongside other ingredients. The ratio of PG to VG in an e-liquid can vary, and the characteristics of an e-liquid can depend on the ratio of these two ingredients.
What is Vegetable Glycerin?
Vegetable glycerin (VG), also known as glycerol or glycerin, is a clear, colourless, and odourless liquid that is derived from vegetable oils, such as soy, coconut, or palm oil. It is used in many different products, including food, medications, and personal care products. In the food industry, it is often used as a sweetener or a humectant (a substance that helps retain moisture). It is also used in the production of soap, as well as in the manufacturing of explosives and other industrial products.
In e-liquids for electronic cigarettes, VG is used as a base for the liquid that is vaporized and inhaled.
In most e-liquids, vegetable glycerin provides the bulk of the liquid and creates the vapor when the e-liquid is heated in an electronic cigarette. It is a thick liquid that helps to carry the flavour and create smooth, satisfying thick clouds of vapor.
What is Propylene Glycol?
Propylene glycol is a colourless, odourless liquid that is commonly used as a base in a variety of products, including electronic cigarettes and vape juice. It is a type of alcohol that is considered safe for use in food and personal care products, and is generally well-tolerated by most people. Propylene glycol is used in many products because it is able to dissolve a wide range of substances, and it produces a thick, smooth vapor when heated.
When propylene glycol is used in an e-liquid, it acts as a base that helps to create the vapor when the electronic cigarette is used. Propylene glycol helps to suspend the other ingredients, such as nicotine in the e-liquid, ensuring that they are evenly distributed and do not separate.
What are the key differences between VG and PG?
High VG e-liquids contain a higher ratio of vegetable glycerin to propylene glycol and produce thicker clouds of vapor when vaporized. High VG e-liquids are known for their smooth, creamy texture and tend to be sweeter than e-liquids with a higher ratio of PG. They may also be preferred by vapers who are sensitive to PG or have allergies to it.
On the other hand, high PG e-liquids contain a higher ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerin. PG is a thin, tasteless liquid that produces a more discreet amount of vapor and has a stronger throat hit, which can be similar to the feeling of smoking a traditional cigarette. High PG e-liquids tend to have a more pronounced flavour and may be preferred by vapers who want a strong, satisfying throat hit.
What’s the best VG/PG ratio for me?
It is important to note that the choice of a high VG or high PG e-liquid can depend on personal preference and the type of vaping device being used. Some devices may work better with one type of e-liquid over the other. It is always best to carefully research and consider the characteristics of different e-liquids and to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the use of e-liquids with a specific vape device.
